This profile describes his role in the company without attributing the work of its many teams to one person.

Founding OpenAI

In its December 11, 2015 introduction, OpenAI named Altman and Elon Musk as co-chairs. The same announcement identified other founding-team members, including Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever. Altman was therefore one of the founders, not the sole founder.

Current role

OpenAI identifies Altman as its co-founder and CEO. His role concerns leadership of the organization; its research and products are the work of multiple teams and contributors.

Why this profile matters

Altman is part of OpenAI’s founding history and current leadership. Distinguishing the person from the company and from products such as ChatGPT helps readers understand each entity accurately.

Controversies and public debate

Sam Altman became the center of a major governance controversy when OpenAI’s board removed him in November 2023 and reinstated him days later after pressure from employees and investors. The detailed causes of the internal breakdown were only partly disclosed, so undocumented motives should not be inferred. OpenAI’s restructuring and its relationship with Microsoft have also fueled debate over how the organization balances its nonprofit mission with capital needs and commercial growth.
