Elon Musk is a co-founder of xAI. In an official announcement published in 2025, xAI identified him as co-founder and CEO. That dated source alone does not establish that the executive title has remained unchanged.

Musk is associated with the company’s founding and public direction. That does not mean he personally developed every Grok model or authored all of xAI’s research; those are team efforts.

Elon Musk has been involved in a public and legal dispute with OpenAI over its corporate direction and relationship with Microsoft.
