We had worked together years earlier, and I knew him well. He was the kind of person who did not make much noise around himself. A very good employee, reliable, precise, and genuinely competent at what he did, but never the type to constantly talk about his achievements or try to stay in the spotlight.

He sounded frustrated.

“Fouad, I’ve applied to around twenty jobs in the last two months, and no one has replied.”

The first thing I asked him was, “What does your LinkedIn profile look like?”

He told me it was updated, so I checked it. Everything was there: job titles, companies, years of experience, a few skills. In other words, it was basically another version of his CV.

Then I asked, “Do you post anything? Do you write about your work? Do you comment on topics related to your field?”

He answered very simply: “No. I’m just a normal employee. What would I even have to say?”

That was exactly the problem.

Not because every employee should become a content creator, and not because everyone needs thousands of followers, but because my friend had years of experience, knowledge, and lessons behind him, while almost none of that was visible online beyond job titles and dates.

He was genuinely good at what he did, but there was very little that helped someone who did not already know him discover that.

A CV Tells People Where You Worked, Not How You Think

For a long time, the CV was the main professional window for anyone looking for a job. You listed your experience, education, and skills, sent it out, and waited.

CVs still matter, of course, but the problem is that they reduce people more than we like to admit. Two candidates can have almost the same years of experience, the same job title, and the same list of skills, while being completely different in the way they think, solve problems, learn, and communicate.

Very little of that fits neatly onto one page.

That is why your professional presence online matters. Not because it replaces your CV, but because it adds context to it. Your LinkedIn profile, what you write, how you comment, the topics you care about, and the way you discuss problems in your field all give people a broader picture of you than a list of positions ever could.

For me, this is where personal branding really begins.

It is not about telling people you are an expert.

It is about leaving enough evidence for them to see how you think and decide for themselves.

Personal Branding Does Not Mean Becoming an Influencer

I think part of the problem starts with the term itself. When many employees hear “personal brand,” they imagine someone posting every day, constantly talking about themselves, documenting their life, and building a huge audience around their name.

That image makes a lot of people reject the idea before they even think about it.

But professional personal branding is much simpler than that.

It is simply the image that forms around you over time.

What do people know you for? What field do they associate your name with? When a certain problem appears, would someone think of you as a person who understands it? When someone visits your profile for the first time, do they see only a work history, or do they also see a mind behind that experience?

You do not need to be famous. You do not need to post every day. You do not need to treat yourself like a product that requires a marketing campaign.

You only need to be present enough for people to understand something real about you.

I Saw the Difference First-Hand While Hiring

Around a year ago, I was looking for someone to join the content team at Done. I received a large number of CVs, and many of them were perfectly fine on paper, but they looked remarkably similar.

Three years of experience.

Content writing.

Arabic and English.

Social media.

SEO.

The same words appeared again and again, with only the names of companies changing.

Then I found someone on LinkedIn whose CV was not the most impressive among the candidates, but he had been consistently writing about his work. He shared experiences, explained mistakes he had made in previous content, wrote about campaigns that had not performed as expected, and talked openly about what he learned from them and how he approached writing differently afterward.

Through his posts, I understood things about him that were not written anywhere in his CV. I could see that he thought seriously about his work, reviewed his own decisions, learned from results, and had a real relationship with the field rather than just a list of skills.

I contacted him directly.

In the end, he did not join us because he had other offers, and the one we made was not the strongest financially.

But for me, that was not the point of the story.

The important part was that his professional visibility made me discover him in the first place.

If his profile had been empty, he might have remained just another name among dozens of applicants.

The Value You Have Needs to Be Discoverable

There are many excellent employees whose abilities are known only inside the team they work with. They solve difficult problems, learn constantly, support colleagues, and understand their field deeply, but all of that value stays inside meetings, internal messages, and company documents.

Then one day they decide to look for a new opportunity and discover that the market knows almost nothing about them.

That is where the problem appears.

Experience matters, but if it is not discoverable, the people who may need it might never find it.

This does not mean turning everything that happens at work into content. Sometimes it is enough to share one lesson you learned, a problem you faced and how you approached it, a tool you tested, or a small observation from your daily work.

Over time, these small things start building a picture.

Not an artificial picture, but one that is often closer to the truth than a CV can ever be.

Most People Have More to Share Than They Think

Whenever someone tells me, “I have nothing to write about,” I usually ask what they did at work over the past week.

Then they start talking.

They solved a problem with a client.

They learned a new tool.

They found a better way to organize a process.

They made a mistake and understood why it happened.

They noticed something interesting in their market.

They discovered a way to save their team time.

All of these things can become simple, useful content.

The problem is that many people think content has to be a “big idea” before it is worth sharing, while most useful professional content comes from small details that someone has actually lived through at work.

You do not need to explain the whole world.

Sometimes it is enough to explain one thing you learned this week.

Relationships Often Start Before You Ever Meet the Person

One of the biggest benefits of professional visibility is that people can get to know you before you know them.

Someone may read something you publish today and never contact you. Then they see another post a month later. After a while, your name becomes familiar to them, and they begin to understand roughly what you do and how you think.

Then six months later, when they need someone with your profile, you may be the first person who comes to mind.

This kind of opportunity is very different from the traditional job application process because the conversation does not start from zero. The other person already has an impression of you, has read something you wrote, and may have followed your work for some time before reaching out.

This has happened to me more than once, and I have seen it happen to many people around me.

Not because they had millions of followers, but because they were visible enough to become known inside their professional circles.

The Best Personal Brand Is the One That Actually Looks Like You

There is another part of this that matters a lot to me: building a professional presence does not mean inventing a new version of yourself for the internet.

In fact, if your personal brand becomes too different from who you really are, it quickly becomes exhausting to maintain.

You do not need to act as if you know everything, turn every small success into an inspirational story, or present your career as an endless sequence of wins.

You can say that something did not work.

You can say that your opinion changed.

You can admit that you are still learning.

You can talk about mistakes.

Sometimes these things make your presence more credible, not less.

People do not need a perfect version of you. They need a clear and honest sense of how you think and what you can contribute.

How Do You Start Without Turning Your Life Into Content?

If I had to advise an employee starting from zero, I would not tell them to build a ten-page content strategy or post every day.

I would tell them to start by fixing their LinkedIn profile so that it reflects who they are today, not just where they have worked. Then choose two or three topics connected to your work and start sharing around them naturally.

Once a week is enough at the beginning.

Write about something you learned, a problem you faced, or your opinion on a change happening in your field. And when you genuinely have nothing to say, do not publish just to stay visible.

The goal is not to fill the feed.

The goal is to help people gradually understand what you know and what you care about.

Interacting with others matters too. Many professional relationships begin with a thoughtful comment long before they begin with a long post.

Your personal brand is not only what you publish about yourself. It is also how you show up in the professional conversations happening around you.

Two Months Later, the Story Changed

After our conversation, my friend started changing a few things in a very simple way. He updated his profile, rewrote his summary, and began posting roughly once a week about things he was learning and experiencing at work.

He did not become an influencer.

He did not start publishing five times a day.

He simply became easier to understand and easier to discover.

After some time, he called me again.

This time, he did not sound frustrated.

He told me that a hiring manager from a large company had contacted him and said he had been following some of what he was posting and wanted to talk to him about a possible opportunity.

The difference this time was that my friend had not applied first.

The other person found him.

For me, that story captures the whole idea.

A personal brand does not guarantee you a job. It does not make every opportunity come to you automatically. And it definitely does not replace being genuinely good at what you do.

What it does is make the value you already have easier to see and easier to discover.

You Are More Than the Line on Your CV

That is why I do not think employees should wait until they become managers, recognized experts, or people with twenty years of experience before they start building a professional presence.

You can begin in the first years of your career.

In fact, that may be the best time.

You do not need to teach everyone everything. It is enough to document part of what you are learning yourself.

Over time, you will build a real record of your development, and other people will see something much clearer than the job title sitting next to your name.

In the end, personal branding is not an attempt to convince people that you are better than you really are. It is simply a way to make it easier for them to see what you actually know, how you think, and what you can contribute.

Because you may be excellent at your job, but the people looking for someone like you still need a way to discover that.

You can be excellent at your job and still remain invisible outside your company.
