Fei-Fei Li is an American computer scientist specializing in AI and computer vision and a professor at Stanford University. She is closely associated with ImageNet and with the movement for human-centered AI.

ImageNet and computer vision

ImageNet provided a large dataset and benchmark that helped researchers measure advances in image recognition. Its impact came from a broad collaborative effort and should not be attributed to one person alone.

Human-centered AI

Li helped establish Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI and AI4ALL. She advocates greater diversity in the field and closer study of AI’s social effects.

Controversies and public debate

ImageNet drew criticism for biased or derogatory labels and for including images of people without sufficiently clear privacy expectations. Project teams later worked to review the people category and reduce harm. Li was also connected to internal debate at Google over the military Project Maven contract. These issues concern data governance and institutional use and do not define her entire scientific career.
