When you open a Google app on your phone, type a question into Search, or open Gmail, you are often in direct or indirect contact with Gemini without noticing.
Because Google did not build Gemini as a separate tool users visit only by choice. It built it as a thread running through nearly all of its products.
That reach is the biggest difference between Gemini and its competitors.
What is Gemini?
Gemini is a family of AI models from Google DeepMind, powering a chat tool of the same name, and also appearing built into Google Search, Gmail, Google Docs, and Android.
In technical principle, it is a large language model that generates text in response to your request, the same as ChatGPT and Claude. But its deep integration with the rest of Google’s products gives it direct access to your email, documents and maps if you allow it, something competing tools do not offer with the same ease.
What is it good at?
Integration with Google services. It can read your email, summarise your documents, and help with your calendar, directly from inside apps you already use.
Up-to-date search. Thanks to its link with Google Search, its access to recent information is often faster and more accurate than competitors relying on a separate external search step.
Understanding images and video. Strong capabilities in analysing visual content, a direct inheritance of DeepMind’s computer vision research.
A relatively generous free tier. Its free version is more widely usable than some competitors, especially for anyone who already has a Google account.
Where does it fall short?
More complex privacy questions. Because it connects to your personal services, questions about who sees your data and how it is used carry more weight than with a standalone tool not linked to your account.

Naming confusion. Google has renamed its products in this space more than once (Bard previously), which confuses anyone following from a distance.
Plans and pricing
Google offers a free version of Gemini, plus paid plans under the Google One AI Premium umbrella, which differ in usage limits, available models, and included storage.
Since these plans change regularly and are sometimes tied to other Google subscriptions, the only reliable source is the official subscriptions page.
